The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) expresses significant concern over the abrupt decision by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to terminate its contract with the Director of the National Institute for Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS). Walter Koroshetz, MD, FAAN, who has served in NINDS leadership for nearly two decades, is a highly respected leader whose tenure has been marked by numerous advancements in the treatment of neurological conditions. Dr. Koroshetz’s departure will be deeply felt by neurologists, researchers, and the many patients whose lives have been positively impacted by his leadership.
This decision was made without consulting key neurology stakeholders, and there was no formal announcement nor a clear succession plan for NINDS leadership. NINDS plays a vital role in funding and directing research into the brain and central nervous system. Discoveries resulting from NINDS funded research have saved countless lives and made it possible for millions of Americans to live better with neurological disease. For this critical work to continue, it is essential that NINDS has strong leadership that will remain committed to evidence-based medicine.
The AAN remains committed to working with the administration to address the burden of chronic disease in the United States and to ensure brain health for all. As the NIH moves forward in selecting new leadership for NINDS, the AAN strongly encourages meaningful consultation with stakeholders in the neurology community—including the AAN itself, research institutions, and patient groups. Such collaboration is vital to maintain progress in finding new treatments and cures for the patients our members serve.
